The presence of, or a need to install, a chimney fan means that you have a badly designed fireplace.

When a chimney fan is used to address the problem of a smoking chimney the potential heat output is reduced.
Therefore the cost increases because you will be using more fuel than would be needed for the same output.
Not only does it cost more in fuel but you also bear the cost of electricity to operate the fan.
Then you have the cost of fan maintenance and periodical replacement.

There are times when it appears you have no alternative.
Analogy; A person walks on two legs naturally so using a permanent crutch to support themselves self indicates an inability.
A wise person seeks to correct the problem where possible rather than just treat the symptoms.

Possibilities

It’s unfortunate that less and less people know how to address the shortfall in natural phenomena of which a fire in a fireplace is one.
However you are doing yourself a disservice if you do not enquire into the possibility of rectifying the installation.
And I don’t mean asking the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker…

A fireplace is fundamentally a combustion chamber and a flue, be it brick or steel.
These two elements are connected by what is known as a transition.
Problems occur if the combustion chamber and flue do not have a proportional value and or the transition does not connect the two appropriately.
We are not talking rocket science here but basic fundamentals that have been adhered to over millennium.
The fact that it’s information displaced does not mean it doesn’t exist or is not still in play.
So before you go reaching for a quickfix band aid, find someone who knows and rectify the problem.
